Toyota Hyryder
Toyota Hyryder Competition in the midsize SUV segment in India is getting fiercer day by day. The biggest example of this came in May 2025 when Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Hyryder overtook Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara by a huge margin. Figures show that a total of 7,573 units of Hyryder were sold in May 2025, while Grand Vitara was limited to just 5,197 units. This difference not only reflects the market trend, but also makes it clear in which direction customers are now showing inclination.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor recorded a total domestic sales of 29,280 units in May 2025, which is a growth of 22 percent over the same month last year. This is attributed to a strong product lineup like Innova and Fortuner as well as badge-engineered models like Hyryder, which are becoming the choice of customers.
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder not only beat the Grand Vitara, but also registered a tremendous growth of 94 percent as compared to May last year. While 3,906 units were sold in May 2024, this figure reached 7,573 in May this year. Not only this, it has also seen a monthly growth of 63 percent as compared to April 2025. In contrast, the Grand Vitara got sales of 9,736 units in May 2024, but in May 2025 this figure fell to 5,197, which is a decline of 47 percent. If we compare between April and May, then the sales of Grand Vitara have come down by 27 percent.
Both the Hyryder and Grand Vitara SUVs share the same platform, features and mechanicals, but still customers have been more inclined towards the Hyryder. A major reason behind this is the recent updates made by Toyota, which take the customer experience to a new level.
Toyota has recently updated the Hyryder with several major changes. Now six airbags are being provided as standard in all variants of the SUV, which is a big step in terms of safety. Apart from this, changes have also been made in the structure of the SUV to provide better protection to the passengers in case of an accident. Automatic variants now get the facility of Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), which was not available earlier.
The all-wheel drive version of the Hyryder now has a new 6-speed automatic transmission, which has replaced the old 5-speed manual transmission. This change further improves the driving experience, especially for customers who are looking for a more comfortable and modern SUV.
The top-end variants now get an eight-way power driver seat as well as ventilated front seats. At the same time, special attention has also been given to the rear passengers – manually retractable sunshades have been provided on the doors, which provide relief from heat and sun. Apart from this, features like revised speedometer, ambient lighting, dedicated air quality index display, LED reading and spot lamps, and Type-C fast charging ports have been included in the car.
Due to all these updates and better safety features, customers are increasingly liking the Toyota Hyryder. While the decline in Grand Vitara’s sales shows that even though the competition in the market is close, small technical and feature related advances can bring great success to any brand.
It is clear from this entire incident that Indian customers are now giving priority not only to the brand name, but also to modern facilities, safety and comfort. In the coming months, it will be interesting to see how and how much Maruti Suzuki updates its Grand Vitara so that it can compete with Toyota Hyryder in the market.
