Tata Motors
Tata Motors has suffered a major setback in May 2025, when the company’s total vehicle sales registered a huge decline. While passenger vehicle sales declined by 11%, the commercial vehicle segment also witnessed a decline of 5%. The biggest impact has been on the domestic market, where customers are no longer showing the same interest in Tata vehicles as before. There was a slight increase in the sales of electric vehicles, but overall the figures are a matter of concern. What is the reason behind this decline? Know the full report and what changes are going to come in Tata’s strategy.
In May 2025, Tata Motors’ passenger vehicles (Tata PVs) sales have recorded disappointing figures. This month, Tata sold a total of 41,557 units, which is 5,140 units less than May 2024. This means that the company has suffered an annual decline of 11.01%.
If compared to April 2025, at that time Tata had sold 45,199 units. In May, these figures have declined by 3,642 units, which is a monthly decline of 8.06%. This decline for two consecutive months has become a matter of concern for the company.
Tata’s total passenger vehicle sales (domestic + export) stood at 42,040 in May 2025, while this figure was 47,075 in May 2024. That is, the company has faced a total decline of 5,035 units, which is a negative growth of 10.70%.
While there was a decline in the domestic market, Tata definitely got some relief from exports. 483 units were exported in May 2025, while only 378 units were sold in May 2024. That is, a growth of 27.78%.
Similarly, slight growth has also been seen in the EV segment. 5,685 units of EVs were sold in May 2025, while 5,558 units were sold last year. This is an increase of 2.28%.
10% decline in total domestic sales
Tata’s total domestic sales stood at 67,429 units in May 2025, while this figure was 75,173 units in May 2024 last year. That is, a decline of 10%.
Talking about commercial vehicles, HCV (Heavy Commercial Vehicles) truck sales stood at 7,106 units, while it was 7,924 last year. That is, a decline of 10%.
ILMCV trucks (Intermediate and Light CV) have definitely shown a growth of 11% – 4,954 units were sold in May 2025 while 4,478 were sold last year.
There was no growth in the passenger carriers segment – only 4,748 units were sold continuously. At the same time, a massive decline of 20% has been seen in the SCV (Small Commercial Vehicles) and pickup segment. 9,064 units were sold in May 2025 as against 11,337 last year.
CV Domestic sales have declined from 28,476 to 25,872, i.e. a decline of 9%.
CV IB (Commercial Vehicles International Business) has performed strongly. 2,275 units were exported in May 2025, while this figure was only 1,215 in May 2024. That is, a tremendous growth of 87%.
Overall, Tata’s total CV sales stood at 28,147 in May 2025, while last year it was 29,691. That is, a decline of 5%.
The month of May 2025 has been challenging for Tata Motors. There has been a decline in both passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles segments. Although EV and exports have provided some relief, but if the company has to maintain its hold in the market, then it will have to make a special strategy in the coming months.
