A Tata Avinya big update has come out regarding the launch of Tata Motors’ much-awaited electric SUV Tata Avinya. Earlier it was to be launched in 2026, but now the company has postponed its launch till 2027. Vivek Srivastava, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, has confirmed that the Avinya brand will now be launched in the market in 2027.
What is the real reason for the delay?
The biggest reason behind this delay is the partnership between Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Tata had signed an agreement to use JLR’s EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) platform for its Avinya range. Earlier also, both the companies had worked together on the D8 platform for the Harrier and Safari SUVs.
JLR’s Tamil Nadu-based manufacturing unit is not ready yet, which has affected the entire plan. Last year, JLR had talks with local suppliers to supply components for electric vehicles, but this plan was postponed due to high prices.
What is Tata’s Plan B?
In view of the delay in the EMA platform, Tata Motors is now looking for alternative options. There is also a possibility of taking a low-cost EMA version or a new platform from an external source.
The Tata Avinya range will be Tata’s first electric SUV, designed on the Gen 3 skateboard platform. This platform is completely designed for EVs, which will provide flat floor, large cabin space and completely new style.
5 models will come in the Avinya range
The company is planning to introduce a total of five electric models under the Tata Avinya brand. They have been internally codenamed P1, P2, P3, P4 and P5. The P1 model will be the first to come in the market, which will be a premium electric SUV. It will be manufactured at Tata’s Sanand plant and its price can be above Rs 35 lakh.
Based on the Avinya concept shown at the 2022 Auto Expo, the development of this model has progressed a lot. The Avinya X concept shown at the Bharat Mobility Expo is actually believed to be a glimpse of the P4 model.
Avinya’s design will be all new
According to Vivek Srivatsa, Tata’s current EV lineup is still built on the ICE-based Gen 2 Active Architecture, which includes Tiago EV, Punch EV and Harrier EV. But the Avinya models will be based on the Gen 3 skateboard platform for the first time. This will mean more space, flat floor and a completely new design.
Sierra EV will come after Harrier EV
Tata Motors is currently expanding its electric vehicle lineup rapidly. After the launch of Harrier EV, the next number will be Sierra EV, whose launch is expected by the end of 2025. Only after this will the company shift to the Gen 3 platform and launch the Avinya series.
Conclusion
Tata Motors’ Avinya series can revolutionize India’s premium EV segment. Although the delay in launch will make customers wait a bit, but with new technology, JLR collaboration and skateboard platform, Avinya EVs will be a new beginning. The company plans to bring this brand to the market in 2027, and it will be Tata’s most expensive and technologically advanced electric range till date.
