New Tata Altroz :- Tata Motors recently introduced the facelifted version of its premium hatchback Altroz and now its base variants — Smart petrol and Smart i-CNG — are seen in showrooms across the country. Both these variants look attractive and include many features that were only available in the mid or top variants till now.
Prices and Variant Details
The Altroz Smart variants are priced quite competitively. The Smart petrol variant is priced at ₹6.89 lakh ex-showroom, while the Smart i-CNG variant is priced at ₹7.89 lakh. The CNG version is ₹1 lakh more expensive, but it gets Tata’s exclusive dual-cylinder technology, which saves boot space and offers better utility.
Exterior Design
Tata Altroz has given great exterior upgrades in the Smart variants, due to which these variants look premium despite being the base models. These include features like projector headlamps (with halogen bulbs), body coloured bumpers, flush door handles, black ORVMs with LED turn indicators, and LED tail lights. Apart from this, the split roof spoiler also makes the design more sporty.
Steel wheels but top-spec tyres
The 16-inch steel wheels given in the Altroz Smart get 185 section tyres, which are also used in the top-spec variants. This not only improves the ground presence, but also makes the ride quality stronger than before.
Interior premium
The cabin of the Altroz Smart also gives a much better and premium feel. It has features like all four power windows, 2-spoke steering wheel with illuminated Tata logo, central locking system with remote key, and sophisticated manual AC. The dual tone theme and layout of the seats make it look like a mid-level variant, not a base variant.
Tata Altroz Engine
Both the Altroz Smart and Smart CNG are powered by Tata’s trusted 1.2 liter, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine generates 87 bhp of power and 115 Nm of torque in petrol mode. On the other hand, this power output is 72 bhp and 103 Nm in CNG mode. Both engine variants are paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The automatic gearbox is available only in higher variants.
Tata Altroz Mileage
The Altroz Smart i-CNG variant comes with Tata’s dual cylinder i-CNG technology. This technology fits two small cylinders under the boot floor, thereby maintaining space for storing luggage. While the petrol variant gets 345 liters of boot space, the CNG version also has 210 liters of boot space, which is considered to be the highest in this segment.
Safety
The Tata Altroz is the only hatchback in India to receive a 5-star crash test rating by Global NCAP. The Smart variant also comes with safety features like 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESC, and ISOFIX child seat mounts. However, features like manual dimming IRVM and internally adjustable ORVMs are a bit lacking.
Competition
The Altroz Smart competes directly with the Hyundai i20 Base, Maruti Baleno Sigma and Toyota Glanza E. But the Altroz is ahead in many ways in its segment – such as 5-star safety, projector headlamps, bigger tyres, and better build quality. Also, the practicality of the CNG variant gives it a special place.
