Hatchback
The demand for hatchback cars in India has always been tremendous, but the sales report of May 2025 is telling a different story. This time a total of 74,100 units have been sold, which shows a huge decline of 17.94% as compared to May 2024. Let’s know which car made a mark in the market and which failed.
Maruti Swift remained at number 1 with sales of 14,135 units in May 2025. However, in the same month last year, 19,393 units of it were sold. This means that Swift’s sales declined by 27.11%. Still its market share remains 19.08%.
Maruti WagonR secured second place with 13,949 units but it also declined by 3.75%. Maruti Baleno sold 11,618 units, which is 9.53% less than last year.
Tata Tiago / EV performed brilliantly and recorded sales of 6,407 units and achieved a growth of 8.10%. It was the only top car in this segment whose sales saw positive growth.

Maruti Alto sales fell 35.24% to just 4,970 units. At the same time, the condition of Celerio was even worse, whose sales fell by 43.84% to 1,861 units.
Hyundai i10 NIOS sales fell by 18.47% and i20 sales fell by 20.87%. Both models together could not maintain the same hold as before.
Toyota Glanza sales grew by 5.22%, taking it to the fifth position with 4,753 units. Tata Tiago / EV has also made a strong comeback in the market.
Tata Altroz sales declined by 44.23%, which is a matter of concern. Maruti Ignis and S-Presso sales also declined by 11.83% and 18.90% respectively.
MG Comet EV sales stood at 823 units, a decline of 31.42%. Renault Kwid sales were limited to just 540 units. At the same time, sales of Citroen C3 and eC3 EV were very low (110 and 60 units).
Overall, the hatchback segment has seen a huge decline in sales in May 2025. Only a few models like Tata Tiago and Toyota Glanza have shown positive growth. All the other big names like Swift, Baleno, WagonR and Alto have suffered a huge blow. These figures are clearly indicating that a wave of change is coming in the market and customer preferences are now shifting.
