The Indian SUV market witnessed fierce competition in the month of May 2025, but Mahindra Scorpio grabbed the most headlines. Scorpio sold a total of 14,401 units, outpacing Tata Nexon (13,096 units) and Tata Punch (13,133 units). During this period, Mahindra Scorpio and Scorpio Classic together managed to sell a total of 14,401 cars, while Tata Nexon sold 13,096.
Both SUVs also showed year-on-year (YoY) growth. Mahindra Scorpio registered a growth of 5 percent over the previous year, while Tata Nexon showed an impressive growth of 14 percent. However, sales of both models were even higher in April 2025. Mahindra Scorpio sold 15,534 units in April, while Tata Nexon sold 15,457 units.
Mahindra Scorpio attracts Indian buyers a lot due to its engine options. It gets a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that generates 203bhp of power and 370Nm (MT) / 380Nm (AT) of torque. At the same time, the 2.2-litre diesel engine gives 132bhp with 300Nm torque and 175bhp with 370Nm (MT) / 400Nm (AT) torque performance. Under this range, the ex-showroom price of Scorpio starts from ₹ 13.99 lakh and goes up to ₹ 25.15 lakh.
On the other hand, Tata Nexon has two engine options – 1.2-litre turbo petrol that generates 120bhp of power and 170Nm of torque, and 1.5-litre diesel that generates 115bhp of power and 260Nm of torque. Prices for the Nexon start from a base variant of ₹ 8 lakh and go up to a top-end variant of ₹ 15.60 lakh.
The list of top 10 best-selling SUVs in India in May 2025 is as follows: Maruti Brezza (15,566 units) ranked first, Hyundai Creta (14,860 units) ranked second, Mahindra Scorpio (14,401 units) ranked third, Maruti Fronx (13,584 units) ranked fourth and Tata Punch (13,133 units) ranked fifth. Tata Nexon (13,096 units) ranked sixth, Mahindra Thar (10,389 units) ranked seventh, Mahindra Bolero (8,942 units) ranked eighth, Kia Sonet (8,054 units) ranked ninth and Mahindra XUV 3XO (7,952 units) ranked tenth. Toyota Hyryder made it to this list with sales of 7,573 units.
It is clear from this list that in May 2025, Mahindra Scorpio achieved great success in selling on the basis of its strong performance and attractive pricing structure. At the same time, Tata Nexon and Punch also sold more than 13 thousand units with ever-increasing popularity. Overall, this month Mahindra Scorpio made a tremendous comeback in the Indian SUV market and also gave a tough competition to Tata Nexon and Punch.
