Fronx
A new revolution has started in the Indian automobile Maruti’s Hybrid Revolution: Fronx, Baleno and Brezza are bringing tremendous mileage of 40 kmpl market – that of hybrid vehicles. While people’s interest in electric vehicles is increasing, hybrid vehicles have also gained momentum rapidly. In the year 2024, sales of hybrid vehicles increased by 7%, and this figure has reached 3.55 lakh units. Now Maruti Suzuki is also going to enter this segment with its own strong hybrid technology. Let us know in detail about Maruti’s upcoming hybrid models and their technology.
Maruti Suzuki has been using Toyota’s hybrid technology till now, but now the company has developed its own hybrid powertrain technology, which has been codenamed HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle). This is a series hybrid system, which is considered to be economical, simple and reliable compared to Toyota. The special thing about the HEV system is that in this the engine only charges the battery, while the electric motor does the work of driving the wheels. This improves the mileage of the vehicle significantly.
The series hybrid system is a simple but effective technology. It consists of three major components – a petrol engine, a battery and an electric motor. In this system, the engine does not directly drive the wheels, but works to charge the battery or power the electric motor. The wheels are driven only by the electric motor. It is also called ‘Range Extender Hybrid’. Since it does not require a conventional transmission or clutch, its maintenance cost is also very low and reliable performance is available.
The company is going to launch Maruti Fronx Hybrid first in the market with HEV system. The time limit for this has been set as 2026. Fronx has already become popular in the compact SUV category for its stylish design. Now when it will be introduced with a hybrid powertrain, its mileage is expected to reach around 35 to 40 kilometers per liter. This will make this car an attractive option for customers who want better mileage and less maintenance.
The hybrid avatar of Maruti Baleno will also be launched in 2026. Baleno is already one of the best-selling premium hatchbacks in India. Equipped with HEV technology, Baleno will not only be ahead in terms of mileage, but will also be more environmentally friendly. This new generation Baleno hybrid is expected to meet CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) standards and become a smart, eco-friendly option for urban consumers.
Maruti’s plan also includes a new Spacia-based MPV (codenamed – YDB), which will be launched in 2026. This MPV will be equipped with HEV system, making it a low fuel consumption option among large family vehicles. Its design is said to be inspired by Japan’s Spacia. This car will be made especially keeping in mind those customers who want more space, better mileage and low running cost.
Maruti Swift has been known in the Indian market as a reliable and stylish hatchback for years. Now in 2027, a hybrid version of Swift will also be launched. This model will come with HEV system, and it will use Maruti’s new 1.2L Z12E petrol engine. Due to this hybrid technology, Swift will get a new identity, which can be very popular among young consumers and mileage-loving customers.
Maruti’s best-selling compact SUV Brezza will now be launched with a hybrid powertrain in 2029. This will be the company’s last hybrid SUV to come with HEV technology (as planned so far). Brezza is already popular for its features, design and performance, and with the hybrid system its mileage and environmental friendliness will increase even more. This SUV will be the perfect choice for customers who want fuel savings along with a strong look.
Maruti Suzuki plans to have 25 percent of its total passenger vehicle sales come from hybrid cars by 2030. According to the company, about 8 lakh units of hybrid cars will be sold every year by combining both HEV and Toyota’s 1.5L parallel-hybrid technology. This makes it clear that Maruti no longer wants to depend only on petrol-diesel vehicles, but is giving priority to eco-friendly options.
Under the HEV system, Maruti will use its 1.2L Z12E petrol engine which will be according to future CAFE norms. When this engine works with the electric motor, its fuel efficiency can reach 35 to 40 kilometers per liter. With such a tremendous mileage, Maruti’s hybrid cars can attract customers of every class, whether they are in the city or on the highway.
While Toyota’s hybrid technology is quite advanced, Maruti’s HEV system is simpler and less expensive. It is also easy to maintain and due to fewer parts, it can cost much less in the long run than Toyota. This HEV system is especially suitable for small vehicles, which sell more in a country like India.
While the EV infrastructure in India is still in a developing state, hybrid cars provide a viable solution for now. Systems like HEV not only save fuel but also reduce carbon emissions significantly. Maruti Suzuki’s plan shows that the company wants to build a strong hybrid portfolio before moving towards EV, giving users an intermediate option before shifting to EV.
Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming HEV hybrid technology is a major milestone for the Indian automobile sector. The company’s goal is not only to increase fuel efficiency but also to provide high-tech vehicles to customers at a low cost. With popular models like Fronx, Baleno, Swift and Brezza, this hybrid technology is likely to become mainstream rapidly. If you are looking for a strong mileage, environmentally conscious and budget-friendly car in the future, then Maruti’s upcoming hybrid vehicles can prove to be a great option for you.
