The Creta SUV sales report of May 2025 has presented many surprising figures in the Indian auto market. In the compact SUV segment (4.2 meters to 4.4 meters), while Hyundai Creta once again retained the top position by achieving the highest sales, on the other hand, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder has surprised everyone with its excellent performance. On the other hand, the falling sales of Maruti Grand Vitara have drawn lines of concern for the company.
Hyundai Creta / EV sold a total of 14,860 units in May 2025, which is only a marginal growth of 1.35% compared to last year. However, this figure is enough to keep it as the segment leader. But the real surprise was given by Toyota Hyryder, whose sales reached 7,573 units with an annual growth of 93.88%. Only 3,906 units were sold in May last year. Not only this, there has been a tremendous jump of 63.14% in the sales of Hyryder as compared to April 2025.
On the other hand, the condition of Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara is getting worse. While 9,736 units of it were sold in May 2024, this figure fell to only 5,197 in May 2025. This is a huge drop of 46.62%. Even if compared month-on-month, the sales of Grand Vitara have decreased by 27.36% between April and May. It is clear from these figures that the increasing popularity of Hyryder has directly affected the demand for Grand Vitara.
Sales of Kia Seltos have also decreased. Its 6,082 units were sold in May 2025, which is 9.71% less than last year. However, it still remains in third place. Tata’s new EV offering Curvv has also made a good entry – it stood at fifth place with 3,063 units sold in May.
The BE6 from Mahindra made a strong debut by selling 1,206 units. Its month-on-month growth was 119.27%, which is a very positive sign about the prospects of the BE6. Honda Elevate also registered a growth of 56.26% between April and May, although it was down 5.92% in the year-on-year figure.
SUVs like MG ZS EV, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun have faced a decline this time. ZS EV sales declined by 33% year-on-year and 58% month-on-month. Skoda Kushaq sales declined by 44.34% and Taigun registered an annual decline of 27.87%.
Lower-end SUVs such as the XUV400 EV, Citroen Basalt, MG Astor and Citroen C3 Aircross performed relatively poorly. MG Astor saw the biggest drop in sales – just 84 units sold with a 91.52% YoY loss.
If we talk about the overall figures, the total sales of the compact SUV segment in May 2025 stood at 42,104 units, which is 1.05% higher than May last year. However, compared to April 2025, there has been a slight decline of 1.9%.
It is clear from these figures that Toyota Hyryder is becoming increasingly popular among customers due to its smart features, better safety and constant updates. At the same time, Grand Vitara and other older models are now in dire need of updating themselves so that they can stay in this competition. The entry of new players like Mahindra BE6 is making this segment even more interesting, and this competition is going to get fiercer in the coming months.
